Oz and the Temple of Nerd

An enigma wrapped in a riddle covered in a mystery....covered in bacon. Samuel L. Jackson is my spirit animal.

One of the things I really wanted to do with Shogun of Harlem was use parts of the existing mythology that could be better served for representation (for both Black and Asian) people instead of mockery. There’s a lot that didn’t get explored in the original movie because, let’s face it….that simply wasn’t the intended purpose and that’s okay.

I remember listening to a podcast featuring the infinitely intelligent Kiese Laymon where he talked about his love for Clubber Lang from Rocky III. Apparently, there was a whole backstory that got written for Lang that never made it into the film. Honestly, there was enough character for even Mr. T to chew on that probably should have made him Rocky’s nemesis for a solid trilogy.

(And yes, We should put time, energy and resources into Our own original characters, but there’s also nothing wrong with allowing yourself to dream and expand on stories that inspire us.)

That’s part of what I wanted from this series. There are so many characters that look like us who don’t get explored so deeply because that wasn’t the story that particular storyteller was telling which, again, is okay. But whether it’s been told or not, every character should have their journey and within that journey is a world to be explored, built up and sometimes broken down.

A wild character like this, most likely thought up in the blink of an eye, has a lot of questions that come with him. “Shogun” answers some of those questions that nobody thought to ask and asks some new ones that maybe another storyteller might come along and address one day.

From an upcoming project with David Santiago…“Shogun of Harlem”

Okay, so here’s my main thing with K**ye and I’ll go away for the night.

Is there a race issue involved in the companies coming down on him? Possibly Probably.

Do I care? Absolutely not. You know why?

Because fuck that. No matter what trouble he got himself into THIS TIME….the fact of the matter is that he has been voluntarily anti-Black on more than one occasion including and especially his commentary about George Floyd. K**ye has made it clear numerous times whose side he’s on.

And it’s NOT ours.

He wants the favor of w**te people so bad? Fine. Let him go over there and see how green the grass is.

But he doesn’t get to come back and hide behind our community again when it’s convenient.

He doesn’t want to be “on code” with us….he shouldn’t get to call for us to be “on code” with him just because boohoo he doesn’t get to be a billionaire anymore.

What Brian Michael Bendis' Exclusive Deal Means For DC (and For Marvel)

hellyeahteensuperheroes:

His work on the hard-boiled Jessica Jones would make him an ideal fit for a comic like Batwoman, or even a new series following Renee Montoya as the Question.

I’m not thrilled at the concept of having a guy who introduced Victoria Hand only to have Molecule Man molest her and then have her killed off, turned Karma evil, had that dumbass story with Jessica dragging a gay girl back to an abusive, religious community she escaped from, gave up on Ult. Jessica Drew the moment other writer revealed she is gay and I’m sure I’m forgetting something, be allowed anywhere near Kate or Renee.

Many of Bendis comics focus on teens, so he may work on a series like Teen Titans or their older counterparts in Titans, with the potential for getting a spin-off book starring a member of one of those teams. Regardless of what book he gets, it’s likely that Bendis will bring with him his penchant for representing minority groups, so DC Comics will very likely find itself quickly becoming even more diverse.

I have to ask…. Is Bendis that diverse as they’re selling him, tho? I mean, I don’t recall a single team book of his that was particurally diverse and when  given one of the teams that has the largest option of heroes, diverse or not, to pick from, X-Men, he opted for….bringing back teenage versions of four white guys and one white girl. Even him making Iceman gay was horribly clumsy, caused serious controversy due to bi erasure and came off as him being a douche another writer tried to hook up Iceman with Kitty Pryde. His works that I’d consider being in favor of diversity are really his solo series. Where did the person writing this article got their ideas from?

Umm…didn’t his New Avengers include Luke Cage, Maya Lopez and at some point, Brother Voodoo?
